Famour Olajumoke...the popular Lagos bread-seller
As Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of an economy in recession, some residents of Hadejia in Jigawa state have expressed concern over a shocking increment in prices of bread. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported that the residents of Hadejia in Jigawa state have expressed concern over hike in prices of bread which have gone up by about 30 per cent in the past few months as Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of an economy in recession.
It was gathered that the medium loaf of bread is now being sold at N270, as against its old price of N200, while a small size loaf costs N150, as against its previous price of N100.
Speaking with a correspondent, a resident identified as Musa Muhammad, said the item is now beyond the reach of the ordinary man in view of its cost.
“I spend N500 on bread, excluding other expenses for ingredients needed for breakfast. This is unlike in the past, when a bread worth of N300 is enough to meet the needs of my family,” he said.
Another resident, Hamisu Garba, said he dropped bread out of his shopping list due to its exorbitant price, adding that he now preferred baked beans and fried yam, which are affordable compared to bread.
Meanwhile, a bakery manager, Kamilu Danladi, attributed the hike to the high cost of flour and other ingredients and explained that prices of flour and sugar had increased to about N16,000 per bag, as against N6,000 and N8,500, respectively.
