The tombstone is no more on the grave

 

A family has been utterly shocked after waking up to the fact that their father's tombstone has disappeared. The Mahlasela family from Vereeniging in Gauteng, South Africa are lamenting a serious loss.

 

The family got the shock of their lives when they found the tombstone at their father’s grave in Evaton Cemetery had disappeared. They suspect that it has been stolen by hoodlums.

 

According to Daily Sun SA, Paulinah Thebeagae (59) told the People’s Paper: “In February we unveiled my father’s tombstone, which cost the family R19 000.

“When I went there to visit my dad’s grave I discovered that the tombstone slab had been stolen.

“It is sad that people no longer have respect for the dead.What kind of wicked person steals someone else’s tombstone?

“When we approached the security guards they told us they didn’t see anything, which goes to show that people’s tombstones are not safe in this cemetery.”

 

The family said they want people to know that their tombstones are not safe there, as drug addicts in the area have no shame or respect, even for the dead.

 

The grave when it was first put in place

 

Maria Mahlasela (86) said: “I told my family when I die I want to be buried with my dead husband.

“But now I fear my tombstone may also be stolen. Why can’t they just leave the dead to rest in peace?”

 

The family said when they went to inquire what was going on, cemetery officials told them that they were not the first to complain about the matter.

 

“To stop this, we need to find the people buying these tombstones,” added Jacob Thebeagae.

 

Daily Sun contacted SAPS spokesman Aubrey Moopeloa, who confirmed that the tombstone had been stolen.

 

“Police are currently investigating the case and no arrests have been made,” he said.
