Tears Upon Tears: Photo of Nigerian Soldiers Bidding their Family Farewell as They Head for 'War'

The picture in question

This is a 54-year old photo of Nigerian troops and their family members in the northern part of Nigeria exchanging pleasantries as they faced the uncertainties of a military assignment abroad. This touching photo was taken at the Kaduna railway station in 1963 as the Nigerian army was about to depart for Congo as part of peace keeping mission.

Its quite hard to say goodbye when you know it might be the last they say. A woman with her baby strapped to her back couldn't hide her tears as her husband consoled her.

Peacekeeping operations could at times take months leaving both parties lonely.
