A Nigerian university lecturer has been nabbed after he allegedly blackmailed another school in Ondo state. A graduate and lecturer of the Federal University of Technology, Akure,(FUTA) has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly blackmailing a private school at Arigidi- Akoko on social media.
According to The Nation, the suspect who graduated from FUTA in 2011, Hakeem Badmus was apprehended in Ibadan for posting a fake information on Twitter against Great Cornerstone International Science college, Arigidi Akoko.
Badmus was alleged to have on July 20, this year posted on social media that a private school, Great Cornerstone international science college, Arigidi Akoko, Ondo state decided to throw over 24 parents and their children into sorrow on a day they should be the most joyous because they didn’t pay N5000 to buy Television for the school, a Tweet that had been discovered to be fake.
A lawyer to the school, Barrister Olanrewaju Ayodele-Ojo from Ikare Akoko had petitioned the police to demand the arrest and prosecution of one lecturer from Fishery Department, FUTA, Mrs Funmilayo Afe -Aguda and Badmus for illegally publishing or posting fake information about his client.
Afe-Aguda was said to have been arrested in August, 2018 and granted bail following the intervention of the FUTA Branch leadership of the Academic staff Union of Universities (ASUU) while efforts to arrest Badmus since July had failed until Wednesday October 10, 2018 when he was apprehended in Ibadan, Oyo state.
Speaking with reporters, Barrister Ayodele-Ojo said his client would ensure the prosecution of the two suspects in law court because their fake post had caused unwarranted image crisis for the school.
At the Police Anti-kidnapping Squad office at Alagbaka Akure, Badmus confessed that Funmi Aguda who he met at FUTA as coursemate, actually gave him the information.
Lawyer to Badmus, Barrister Morakinyo Ogele said he was working for amicable settlement of the matter.
Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Femi Joseph said he was only aware of the arrest and release on bail of Badmus by the police anti-kidnapping squad.
The PPRO assured that the complainant (School’s lawyer and the management) would determine whether the case would be charged to court or not.
Joseph said he was not aware of the arrest of Afe Aguda over the matter.
